Research Profile
Rameshwar Patil, PhD has a broad background in chemistry with special emphasis on synthesis of nanoconjugates that can cross multiple biological barriers including the formidable blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is formed by the brain capillary endothelium and although it plays a neuroprotective role, it also hinders the delivery of almost all large-molecule neurotherapeutics and more than 98% of all small-molecule including many potentially important diagnostic and therapeutic agents to the brain. These therapeutic molecules and antibodies that might otherwise be effective in diagnosis and therapy do not cross the BBB in adequate amounts to be clinically effective. Overcoming the difficulty of delivering therapeutic agents to specific regions of the brain presents a major challenge to treatment of most brain disorders and has been the holy grail for failure of many CNS therapies. The focus of Dr. Patil lab is to develop strategies to deliver drugs across the BBB for imaging and treatment of CNS disorders including brain tumors and Alzheimer's disease.
