Dr. Chugh directs the Center for Cardiac Arrest Prevention at the Smidt Heart Institute. The mission of the Center is to discover and implement novel clinical tools for prediction and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest, thereby reducing the burden of sudden cardiac death in the community. The Center is supported by research funding from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institutes of Health; and Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Chugh initiated and continues to direct the Oregon Sudden Unexpected Death Study, a large, comprehensive assessment of sudden cardiac arrest in a community of 1 million residents founded in 2002. In 2015, this program was extended to Ventura County, California, as the PRESTO (Prediction of Sudden death in multi-ethnic communities) Study. Dr. Chugh has led an independently and continuously funded research program since 2001 and has published over 225 peer-reviewed scientific in the fields of cardiac electrophysiology and sudden cardiac death. He is a peer reviewer for more than 10 scientific journals and is on the editorial boards of several, including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), HeartRhythm journal and JACC Clinical Electrophysiology. He serves as editor of the Rhythm Disorders section for JACC. He is a frequent lecturer on sudden death and arrhythmia-related topics and has accepted more than 325 national, international and regional invited speaking engagements.
